“By going to Joppa Mountain, I was able to offer myself through service, where I also had the opportunity to be like Jesus when he traveled to help the poor and the needy. Glenmary did wonderful in allowing us to not only have time for personal growth in my faith, but also meet families locally, help men and women in need, and volunteer through offering myself to loving everyone I met, just as Jesus loves everyone he meets. “I spent an incredibly rewarding and transformative year as a Mountain Manager from 2019 to 2020, and I strongly recommend this role to anyone seeking to dedicate themselves in service. The volunteer program has developed strong, longitudinal relationships with members of the local community, which you will be invited to carry on. The local Glenmary parishes are another source of community for the managers. Among the most important responsibilities in this position is leading the volunteer groups in their weeklong trips to serve the community. I found this to be the most fulfilling aspect of my year, and I think I improved my leadership skills immensely in this way. One gets to see the groups grow from their experiences and deepen their relationships with one another in real time. The construction projects can be pretty variable and will always be interesting. What’s more, you get to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. I fondly recall my time on Toppa Joppa frequently and still think about it frequently. “
“Working and serving with Glenmary was an incredibly humbling and meaningful experience, which makes sense given that everything they do is humble and meaningful. To a stranger, they might just seem like the locals: hardworking, simple, joyful people living out in the country and living off of what they can grow and what God provides. But seeing them go to work, whether it be visiting the sick with food, building a ramp or a roof for someone who can’t afford it, or something even as great as raising money to get a Catholic Church in the county, was truly a humbling and meaningful experience. The people they serve could easily be lost in their small country towns with little material and spiritual resources, but Glenmary meets them where they are at and serves them in whatever way they need, and they take anybody who wants to come along with them in their mission and meets the volunteers where they are at as well, encouraging them to live simply and humbly like the people they serve.”
