WHAT TO EXPECT

Each weeklong session blends service, prayer, reflection and sharing in an environment of simple living. The goal is Christ-centered service.

HOME REPAIR + RENOVATIONS

HOME REPAIR + RENOVATIONS

We perform home repairs that fit the skills and abilities of our volunteers. Anyone with an open heart to serve can join us in this ministry, though construction skills are always welcome!

FOOD PANTRIES

FOOD PANTRIES

Our volunteers provide labor by packing boxes for distribution at food pantries.

PRAYER AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH

PRAYER AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Each day at the Glenmary Farm on Joppa Mountain begins and ends with prayer. We attend Mass at a Glenmary mission and visit other Christian denominations as well, a great introduction to the local culture.

KINGSWOOD HOME FOR CHILDREN

KINGSWOOD HOME FOR CHILDREN

We help at Kingswood, a non-profit group home for displaced children. The home provides an environment where children can develop a personal relationship with God.

CAMP FIESTA

CAMP FIESTA

Each summer, we run a day-camp for local children at a nearby mobile-home park. Their families are primarily agricultural workers, Latinos, who put in long hours during this season.

EVENING ACTIVITIES

EVENING ACTIVITIES

We tour the county to get a taste of Appalachian heritage. We end each evening reflecting on how we’ve experienced God that day in the faces of those we serve and in the places we visited.

Most likely you will, but we hope cell phone usage will not distract those who serve from those they serve with and those they serve.

ABOUT GLENMARY

Glenmary is a Catholic society of priests, brothers and lay missioners who serve primarily in Appalachia and the deep South. Glenmary was founded in 1939 by Father William Howard Bishop, who had a dream that the Catholic Church would be present everywhere in the United States.

Glenmary has served mission churches in 14 states with the goal to return newly developed parishes to the care of the local diocese. We can then move on to new mission territory.

Glenmary is proud that more than 120 parishes are former Glenmary missions. Our missions are in counties where less than 1% of the population is Catholic, as high as 75% claim no faith affiliation at all. Poverty averages 20%, almost two times the national average.
